*** In answer to some of your questions, I wanted to let you know that I do pray these out loud. This morning, I kept my hand on Kate's head while I read, and she smiled the whole time...and sat still!!!!!!! Praise God for small miracles....:) OH, and also thank you to the sweet reader who noticed I had written Ephesians instead of Philippians on the last one!!! I was tired last night:) It's corrected now!!!! Thanks!!!***
Let me explain.
I do care, I just don't care as much as I care about other things. I don't sit around and pray that my girls will learn to read today, or that they will understand a foreign language by the time they are 6, or that they will know their times table by next week. I do spend a lot of time asking God to give them "undivided hearts (Psalm 86:11), " and praying "that they will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel when they open their mouths (Ephesians 6:19)." I pray that God will help them to be good stewards of their time, their money, their words. I pray for their character, their faith, their decisions, their husbands. I want them to be wise, Godly women who chase after the Lord.
I'm thinking that instead of getting a "My kid is on the honor roll" bumper sticker, I may create a "My kid has an undivided heart" one. And then people will make ones that say "My kid kicked your 'undivided heart' kid's butt" stickers.
Maybe not.
But, the point is that one of the most important things I am privileged to do as a mother is to pray for my children every day.
The other day I came across a verse that God used to prompt me to write this post. If you are a mom (or have someone else you want to pray for specifically), I hope you will join me as I do this for the next 7 days. It struck me that I need reminders during the day to be praying over my girls, and I decided to choose 7 events in a day that would remind me to do so. Then, I chose verses that had to do with that time of the day (for example: as my kids are getting dressed in the morning) and then I put them on notecards.
Here are the events and verses I chose:
1. When they wake up: "Let the morning bring (child's name) word of your unfailing love, for she has put her trust in You. Show (her/him) the way (she/he) should go, for to you (he/she) lifts up her soul." (Adapted from Psalm 143:8)
2. When they are getting dressed: "Therefore, as God's chosen child, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Lord, help (him/her) bear with others and forgive whatever grievances (he/she) has against others. Help (him/her) forgive as the Lord forgave (him/her). And over all these virtues, help (him/her) put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." (Adapted from Colossians 3:12-14)
3. While they are eating: "Teach (child's name) the secret of being content in any and every situation whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Teach (him/her) that (he/she) can do everything through him who gives (him/her) strength." (Adapted from Philippians 4:12-13)
4. When they go out of the house: "(Name of child), do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-His good, pleasing and perfect will." (Adapted from Romans 12:2)
5. While they are taking a bath: Lord, give (name of child) clean hands and a pure heart, and let (him/her) not lift (his/her) soul to an idol or swear by what is false. Let (him/her) receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God (his/her) Savior. Let (him/her) be part of the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. (Adapted from Psalm 24:4-6)
6. When they are going to bed: "The Lord Your God is with you; he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, be will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17)
7. While they are sleeping: "I pray that (name of child) will do everything without complaining or arguing, so that he/she may become blameless and pure, a child of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which he/she shines like a star in the universe as he/she holds out the word of life-in order that he/she may boast on the day of Christ that he/she did not run or labor for nothing." (Adapted from Philippians 2:14-16)
I feel like God has been reminding me more and more lately that I need to live my life in prayer. For my children, husband, family, friends, country, those in need, etc., etc. As a mother, it has been so pivotal for my children to hear me praying out loud over them, and I want to commit to do this every day (seven times a day!) for the next week. If you care to join me, just copy these verses onto index cards (or, if you came here from Jessica's blog, feel free to print them on pretty scrapbook paper and embellish your little heart out....:))

Thanks for sharing a clear vision of prayer for our kids. I have been burdened less about the election itself- but more for the legacy it gives our children. What a challenge to replace popular political ideas with an undivided and prayerful heart.

This is awesome,Angie! I look forward to joining you in praying for my children. I have a wonderful book that is now revised with a new title, but it used to be called Watchmen on the Walls. And it takes 6-7 godly characteristics (wisdom, humility, forgiveness, etc) and has you pray (using Scripture) one characteristic every day for a week. I, too have been praying for my children and their hearts, their future spouses, their lives... What an honor to do so. And how exciting it is when we see their hearts changing. Obviously,it is the work of the Holy Spirit, but what a privilege to see our prayers answered!
You are a WONDERFUL mother and your love for the Lord just flows over into their lives. They are truly blessed to have you and Todd going before God's glorious throne on their behalf.My cousin, Charles Martin (who is a wonderful Christian author), describes seeing knee width parallel lines beside his bed (made by his mother)as a boy. What a beautiful picture.

What a great plan Angie. I will be joining you in this also. It's so easy to get so distracted in life that we somehow forget to do the most important thing. Pray. i will be joining you. i agree, we need to pray for our children more.
Wonderful idea! I always feel a burden to pray for my son even though he is only 2. My constant prayer for him is that he is wise and seeks the Lord in all his life's decisions. I also pray earnestly for his future wife. That she would be guided by the Lord daily and that she is being raised in wisdom and grace. My parents prayed for their children's future spouses since we were children. We have been blessed beyond measure with God-fearing spouses. Praise the Lord!

I just read through Audreys story. I am sitting here with my lap top with tears. It was good to see your strength and good to hear her story. I lost my little man in June 2007. He was stillborn at 38 weeks.

Angie, this came at a perfect time. My 5 year old has been so sassy and had such an attitude lately. I feel like I am constantly getting on to her. I almost don't even want to be around her because she is really getting on my nerves with her attitude and sassy talk. It scares me because I don't want our relationship to be this way. I don't want her to get to be a teenager and we don't get along. It's a scheme of the enemy and I need to pray against it and pray over her. I've tried everything to stop it. Everything, but prayer. So this comes at a perfect time.
One question: **Do you say these short prayers aloud over them and at the time they are doing these things?

I pray over Jordan quite often, hoever you helped me realize something. I don't always say it out loud. Not only does that show a Christ like example to him, but also praying out loud sends satan and his demons running too! BONUS! I will remember to speak out loud from now on! Thanks

PTTSD- Prayers to the Seventh Degree. Kind of like PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Lame, I know, but I didn't spend much time on it! Thank you for this challenge. My oldest (age 6, going on 17) has been especially defiant lately and I know that I need to be praying for her little heart to be restored. I'll keep you posted!

The last few days have been tough for me and this is such a reminder of what I can do in a world that has started to feel so out of my control. Recently, I have become overwhelmed, mainly as a mom raising a baby with Down syndrome, in a world where most don't see value in his life.
I know that God has a beautiful plan for our family, but am struggling with how to share and encourage other families who may be embarking on a similar journey to us.
I pray often for my children, but love the idea of praying throughout the day with and over them. Thank you again for such a beautiful post before bed!

Thank you so much for sharing such beautiful prayers for your children. I think so many of us pray over them during the day, but as I am prompted and when I think about it... this is a great system! Since I'm in the hospital now and can't be with Deacon each time these things occur, I can instead do it when I know he would be doing them :) It's hard being away from him right now but this is a great way to continue praying over him and for God's will in his life... and for Faith Clare's as we await her arrival.

I have never commented but I will be praying. I do not have children of my own yet but I will be praying for one of my dear friend's baby boy. He is 2 1/2 months old and his mama is doing the best she can as a single mom. They live 2 hours from me and I don't see him often but pray for him daily. And speak with his mom almost daily. His father wants nothing to do with him at this point in his life and it breaks my heart more than I could ever describe. I hope this sweet baby realizes how much Jesus loves him from a young age because growing up with out his father is not going to be easy. Thank you for this!

My mom used to pray for our future spouses when she prayed for us at night when we were little... that they too would make good decisions in their lives and be good stewards. I always liked that. Of course, I never got married so I'm not sure where those prayers went for me!

"Serial Sevens" Another psych term but it has everything to do with memory and cognition...being aware of the importance of praying over your children. And really...I know it's a one day at a time deal...but committing those verses to memory, praying longer than a week, even for ourselves, will do wonders. I just started a prayer journal, but this is a way better idea! :o) You could just call it 7 for 7 or 7.4.7 (meaning 7 prayers for 7 days). I don't know just a thought. (or whatever cool acronym you end up choosing) Just an idea. I made one but its not very awesome, i'm sure you could do better, or know someone who could. I have 5 children that I am raising by myself now. I was divorced almost 3 years ago...we have been heartbroken and lost many days of *schooling* here at home.
I walk a line between feeling like I have failed and finding balance between what I feel God would have them know.
Recently a guest minister visited our church and spoke specifically on forgiveness.
The children and I believe for reconciliation of our family but at the same time are walking through the fire and our hearts are trampled daily.
This minister gave his testimony about asking God for a heart that forgives daily for a very long time and then one day he went to pray it and felt no unforgiveness to pray for...only peace and joy.
So, long story short; the Holy Spirit has prompted me to daily at the dinner table ask God on behalf of my children and myself to help us to walk in unforgiveness toward their father. Even before this man came with his forgiveness message I felt the Lord wanted us to add something more to our dinner prayer...now I know what it is.

Great idea - I wish I could ever get around to the embellishing and scrapping - I'll just have to go with a printed copy -- that's all I can do anymore to try to keep up! I have several kids in my life, but 1 in particular that is going through incredible hardship and challenge right now. I will do this for him. I love this idea. What a great way to remind us daily to pray for our precious little ones. I made business cards with my kids pictures on them to remind me to pray.
I am currently waiting on the Lord to bless us with a baby, but I have decided to join you anyways =-). I figure God already knows who our children are going to be, so He knows their names even if I do not yet...
and then when we are blessed with them I can tell them "I have been praying for you since before God even knit you in my womb!"

Can I just share what God spoke clearly to me today?
As I was praying aloud by myself in the car, I was suddenly struck by this thought:
God doesn't need my prayers.
He needs my ATTENTION.
How silly to think that the Creator of the Universe NEEDS my petitions to Him in order to move His mighty hand.
Instead - He needs my heart - focused on him. Becoming more humble and more like Him daily. Each time I turn my focus to Him, I empty my worries of their power, and my sadness of its pull.
It has in one day changed my prayer life.
Thank you for sharing what you are doing with your girls. I can't wait to do this with my little miracle boy.

AWESOME!! I don't have kids, but I think I can do a modified version for some of my friend's kids.
Awesome idea! I've done something similar on several occasions throughout the years but have never really "stuck with it" I'm ashamed to say.
For the last few months though, I've taken your idea of asking the kids three questions each night as I am putting them to bed (what was the best part of the day, what could you have done better, what do you need to ask God to forgive you for today). I have to tell you that their attitudes towards each other has changed SIGNIFICANTLY! Really, their attitudes about everything has changed. They realize with certainty that if they do something wrong they are gonna have to fess up notonly to me but to God! That makes them think twice alot more often.
I was at my wits end with their fighting a few months back and this REALLY REALLY worked for us. Thank you for such a great idea.

Although this is my first time to comment, I have been a reader since the early spring. I have been praying for several weeks for God to help me focus my prayer time for my children. I sometimes feel so rushed or so overwhelmed that I don't even know exactly what to pray for.
I will be writing these seven down and adding it to my daily activities with my children. I have a prayer journal that I use during my quiet time, but I never would have thought to pray openly around my children. Fabulous idea! Thanks for another great post Angie.
At times in our lives we are looking for something, someone, somewhere, somehow and don't even know it. That is where I am I have a wonderful husband a beautiful little girl, a good job, a nice house, I will be finishing my BSN in December and until tonight I did not realized I had been neglecting someone in my life. Someone who waits patiently for our return, that welcomes you with open arms, the person who will lighten our load, who wants to bless us, is the person that I have neglected, I have disregarded my relationship with my Heavenly Father. Thank you for your words I have never lost a child but your blog, your Faith, your unending trust in our Creator is what has connected me to your blog. I have faith in Jesus Christ he is our redeemer, our savior, and I long to have a conversation with him as you have often shared in your blog. Also as an OB Nurse I have come across a service that might be of some comfort to a mother who is losing their childNow I lay me down to sleep. I really like the idea of calling it "7-Up"... it's easy to remember and it will start conversations easily when others ask about its meaning!
At first I didn't really think this was relevant to me since I'm only 20 and don't have kids yet but then I remembered I have a godson, and a tribe full of kids that I teach at Sunday School... whoops! Good thing God reminded me! :D

I would love to join you in this! I have six little ones, 2 girls and 4 boys, and often feel that there isn't enough time in the day to pray for all of them as thorouhly as I would like to. A great friend of mine introduced me to praying with Scripture from my kids. She actually writes down the Scriptures with their names substituted in on spiral bound 4x6 cards with maybe a little note on it as well for each day. She then gives these little books to her older kids to put in their rooms, opened to that days prayer so that they can read and reread it and know how Mom is praying for them.
Oh, and she has 5 kids she does this with!

This was such a blessing to me today. I have been praying that the Lord would make me more of constant prayer warrior, especially for my children (as I fail so much every day as a mother and realize my own and their great need for a Savior and His work in all of our lives). I am excited to join this band of accountability to do this this week and see how the Holy Spirit will work in our lives through. May God be glorified and please to answer the prayers of his people. I love his promise for mothers in Isaiah 40:11 "He tends his flock like a shepherd; he gathers his lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; HE GENTLY LEADS THOSE WHO HAVE YOUNG."

My husband and I are counting down the days (42!) until our first son is born, and though we have prayed more general prayers over him throughout our pregnancy, I have been seeking out specific scripture to speak over him recently. Thank you for this, Angie. I have two teenagers and a 6-year-old. I feel I failed in praying for my children as I should. This will give me incentive with reminders to be in prayer for ALL my children seven times a day. I will print this out and study it. My goal would be to be able to quote the scripture to my youngest as we pray. The older ones aren't home much, but they are going to be prayed for as well.

Thank you! I've inserted my child's name and printed each out. I will hanging these around the house until I learn them by heart. I do pray over and with her during the day, but to specifically pray scripture is a gift that will allow her to hide His word in her heart.
What a great idea. I was thinking that I could post these in the places where we do those certain things that way I'll be more likely to remember them.

2nd I think praying for my daughter is the best thing I can do for her as a mother. I love your 7 Prayers A Day & I'm going to give it a try. Granted my child is only 1-1/2yr, I still feel that God can & will use her for great things.

Angie, Thank you!! I am a homeschool mom and I needed to read your words today. I have such an internal struggle that goes on in my mind. I desire all that you shared, but I get so distracted by my chores. I try to teach, homeschool, clean the kitchen, teach, fold laundry, teach, sweep the floor....and I am tired! Your words today along with my Beth Moore study on Paul has reminded me I am distracted from what is most important...the hearts of my 3 girls. Satan uses the distraction of my home to take from what I am to be pouring into the hearts of my girls...his word. Thank you Angie. I haven't posted here before, but I was very encouraged by your post this morning. I find it hard to pray for my children as I'm rushing around getting them ready for school each morning, but these 7 verses are great. I will definitely try to incorporate them into our daily routine. This came at such a great time as both of my children prayed to receive Christ as their Savior last night. What a blessing! God is definitely using you to reach others. Can I just add that I absolutely love the song "Glory" on the Selah Duets Album. :)

I am so glad I am not the only one who feels that way. Some evenings when my husband is on night rotation and my girl snuggles with me, I can't wait to lay my hand over her warm head and pray for her. Everything from grades in school, safety, happiness-all the way to future husband. I don't know if the little boy's parents are praying for him as much as I do some days!!!Just kidding, I hope they do.

Angie, thank you for posting this and sharing it with us. I always worry about my children and if they will decide to follow Jesus (my husband is not a believer, and it makes it more difficult.) Thank you thank you for reminding me to pray specifically for my children. (God is bigger than my fear!) They are His children, too, and I have to have faith that He can draw them to Him.

Angie, you amaze me over and over. Your heart is so guided by God, and I tend to fight it and let the world seep in. I have been so focused on our country and the new President-elect and all that means that I haven't been praying for my children as much as I should. What a wonderful reminder. I will definately be joining in (and decorating my cards with stickers and such!!)
I have only been a mommy for 1 year. And I want so much to make the right decisions for her and to raise her to know God and do his work.
Madi was adopted and I have been so blessed to be called by God to be her Mommy. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't thank Him.

As a mother of a 22 and a 17 year old my prompts will have to be different as I will have to choose 7 times a day to pray since I have no idea when my oldest will be attending to her needs but it is a wonderful idea and I intend to use it. Thanks you so much for your words of Godly wisdom and for taking the time to share what God lays on your heart.
Early this morning I was thinking about this very topic--that I care much less about my girls' academics than their hearts toward the Lord. I was thinking of ways to teach them as they "lie down, sit up, walk along the way..." Then I logged on and saw this post. Please know I continue to pray often for you, Nicol, and all your families. Especially as I cradle Crew and wonder why God gave Him to me when others have empty arms. I know and trust that God has answers for all if us- in time. Until then, I ask for His unending mercies and amazing peace.
as i was preparing for our churchs' week of prayer and fasting this week, I just did this!!! I needed reminders to pray in every situation. I have scripture posted on our front door, to remind us to pray together before they leave for school, i have one on my steering wheel in my car to remind me to pray before we drive any where, I have one on the dinner table to remember to give thanks at every meal. It'a been amazing!! I'm so glad you posted this. I am a true believer that scripture helps to transform the heart.

I love that you've done this! The verses you picked are so great. So last night I dug out my scrapbooking bin & printed out the verses on cutesy paper (after substituting my kids names in them) and glued them onto more cutesy paper. Then I cut them out this morning & posted them all over the house with painters tape on the back (as to not damage anything). My son Joshua is 2 1/2 and was watching me do this. Of course he wanted to play with his own scissors & kept asking for blue tape, but after they were all up (I too put them in places that would help me remember), I sat him down and read the morning verse with him. He was so happy that he ran around to all the other places in the house pointing at them and jumping up and down asking for me to read them! It was so sweet to see him hungry for more prayer!
I don't have any fancy acronyms, but I love the ones people have posted.

PS - I changed the bathtime one to when we wash our hands & put it in our downstairs bathroom. That way I get to say it way more than once a night (or more like once every other night!)

I have never commented here before but I have followed your sweet story for a few months now, I am truley moved by your faith and your strength and by the example you set as a mother. It really is beautiful how you use God's word in all your posts and I look forward to joinig you in prayer this week. I work full-time and spend so much time away from my children that it hurts my heart but to pray for them without ceasing as I go through my day I hope that they will not only be wrapped in prayer but it will also help to ease that ache in heart knowing God is holding them close even when I can't.

Hey Angie this is great. I am unable to have children but have a special friend and his newborn son who just lost their wife and mother who prayed fervently over them. I will be praying for this family. The funeral was yesterday so this is the perfect time to start.

Wouldn't these be wonderful as wall art? The bathing one in the bathroom, the going out one over the door, etc? I've painted scripture on our walls before (albeit we don't live in that house today) and loved it. These would be wonderful in our current home -and I am seriously thinking about doing it!!!
